To anyone reading this, I encourage you to help spread the word that a vaccine can prevent this type of cancer and others caused by HPV.
The Anal Cancer Foundation is able to support thrivers and researchers alike thanks to people sharing news about their experiences and the importance of HPV-related cancer prevention, screening, and research. Lack of awareness is one of the greatest obstacles to eradicating HPV and finding a cure for anal cancer. Help us spread the word about HPV and anal cancer by using the tools below.
Here are a few facts to get you started:
- 44,000 cases of HPV-related cancers will be diagnosed, inclusive of head and neck, penile, vaginal, anal vulvar cancer, in the US this year alone. In the UK, roughly 15,000 people will be diagnosed.
- Approximately 8,600 people will be diagnosed with anal cancer in the US in 2020 and about 1,400 in the UK.
- It is estimated that over 91% of anal cancer cases are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).
- Uptake of the HPV-vaccine is dangerously low for boys and girls in the US and only available to girls and boys aged 11-13 in the UK.
Educate your Community
Organizing an educational event, with or without us, is a great way to inform people about anal cancer and how to prevent it.
Facilitate your own event or reach out to the Anal Cancer Foundation to speak at your school or event! We are available and excited to speak on a wide variety of topics, from vaccine advocacy the anal cancer experience, and we would be honored to share with you our own story and experiences with anal cancer.
We have an ongoing effort to reach out to every clinician who treats, meets and works with anal cancer thrivers. We are always looking for representatives in each state to work as volunteers to help with this initiative. We even have a volunteer packet to help our volunteers with their outreach! Once a clinician has been contacted, we send a kit with the Fact Sheets, Peer to Peer Support Program postcards, awareness ribbons, and 'kick cancer's ass!' bracelets to hand out to thrivers they interact with.
