Diagnosed at 40 years old with anal cancer, stage unknown.
In February 2022, I was diagnosed with anal cancer after numerous visits to the GP due to severe pain in the anal area, initially thought to be hemorrhoids. This discomfort persisted for about a year, progressively worsening despite treatment with hemorrhoid creams prescribed by the GP. Two months later, I arranged an emergency appointment with the GP as the pain became unbearable. During an internal examination, the GP found no unusual signs despite the presence of protrusions both externally and internally. Expressing my dissatisfaction with the ineffectiveness of the prescribed treatment, I requested urgent cancer tests. Subsequently, I underwent an endoscopy, followed by an immediate CT (or MRI) scan, which revealed a concerning and potentially cancerous finding. Thus began my journey.
My oncologist determined the cancer to be anal, extending outside the anus and causing substantial bowel damage, leading to fecal incontinence. Despite initial reluctance, I underwent stoma surgery before commencing intense radiotherapy and chemotherapy in April 2022. The chemotherapy caused severe adverse reactions, resulting in hospitalization for a week. Contrary to expectations, I lost my hair entirely.
Pelvic radiotherapy caused third-degree burns, leaving me bedridden for three weeks and enduring ongoing radiation cystitis. Despite completing treatment, persistent bleeding and pain necessitated further surgery. On February 16, 2023, I underwent APR surgery, lasting over ten hours. The extensive procedure involved removing my rectum, vagina, part of the bowel, and reconstructing the pelvic floor muscle. Complications arose post-surgery, requiring emergency procedures to address tissue necrosis, leaving me with a sizable open wound requiring daily care.
Recovery proved arduous, with months spent bedridden and enduring excruciating pain managed with potent medications. The loss of my vagina, contrary to assurances, has been emotionally devastating. Now, over a year post-surgery, I still require daily wound care but find solace in my remission and gradual improvement.
Throughout this journey, the unwavering support of my partner and father has been invaluable. Reflecting on my experience, I advocate for greater transparency about the realities of this journey to aid others facing similar battles.
